Why do mussels in vinegar sometimes have green tails? Is this bad?

Mussels in vinegar can sometimes show a green discoloration on the "tail" of the shell. This is caused by a reaction between the vinegar and the copper in the shell. Although it may look less appealing, this green discoloration is not harmful and does not affect the quality, taste, or safety of the mussels.
