Sustainability

Prins en Dingemanse is a brand of Roem van Yerseke. For generations, we have worked closely with nature and understand the importance of sustainable business practices. That is why we are committed to reducing our footprint and continuously improving the eco-friendly cultivation and processing of shellfish and crustaceans.

Heat exchangers

This idea results in production sites equipped with materials and (smart) techniques that lead to less energy consumption and wear. The insulated production halls are equipped with LED lighting with presence detection, there are heat exchangers that help reuse residual energy, and the production lines are equipped with controllers and computerized switch cabinets. Solar panels are installed on the roof, and our ships are equipped with modern, efficient drive lines.

Mussel shells

We use the empty mussel shells, which come as waste from mussel processing, as collectors for oyster spat and Mussel Seed Capture Installations (MZI) to capture mussel seed in the water column. Additionally, Roem van Yerseke has developed its own shellfish hatchery – a nursery for mussels, oysters, and carpet shells that are further cultivated on plots in, among others, the Oosterschelde and the Grevelingen.

PEFC oyster baskets

The principle of Roem van Yerseke is to choose sustainable materials where possible and responsible. Most products are packaged in fully recyclable plastic packaging. Additionally, wooden oyster baskets that are PEFC certified and 100% biodegradable jute bags are used. The paper and cardboard are FSC certified.

Certification

The shellfish and crustaceans used are certified with the recognized sustainability labels Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), and Euro-Leaf (BIO).

Facts about Prince
What are MZIs?

Prins & Dingemanse uses MZIs. These mussel seed capture installations are a sustainable alternative to traditional mussel seed harvesting.

How does it work?

A mussel seed capture installation consists of nets or ropes hanging in the water. Mussel larvae attach themselves to these nets and ropes, which then grow into baby mussels of one to two centimeters. This is the mussel seed. The MZIs are in the water every year from March 1 to November 1. In the summer and fall, harvesting takes place one or more times.
