There is always talk about cooking mussels, but you actually don't need any water at all, so it's more accurate to talk about steaming the mussels. A small amount of water or a splash of wine or beer is enough. The mussel juice in the shell is released when they open, and that's sufficient for a deliciously tender mussel! Once all the shells are open, they are ready. This usually takes about 5 minutes.
