Whelks live on the soft sandy seabed of the North Sea up to a depth of 1,200 metres. The shell is white in colour on the inside and brown/green on the outside and can grow up to 10 centimetres in size.

Usage / taste | They are also known as 'buckies'. A large type of sea snail that is sold on fairs and markets in Belgium under the name of 'caracollen'. They are cooked for 20 minutes in a court bouillon, but do not cook them any longer because they will become tough. You can use a needle to pry the meat from the shell, but you do need a fork first to remove the lid from the hole. |
