Koninklijke Prins & Dingemanse signs cooperation agreement with algae cultivator
16-11-2007
The branch of Koninklijke Prins & Dingemanse that is involved with the development and organisation of aquaculture on land, Prins & Dingemanse Aquacultuur B.V., last month signed a cooperation agreement with Aquaphyto of Zeewolde.

Mr. Baard (Aquaphyto) and Mr. Prins (Royal Prins & Dingemanse)

Aquaphyto is an innovative enterprise specialising in developments and innovations in the cultivation of algae for, among other things, aquaculture. Together, the two companies will endeavour to devise a concept for cultivating shellfish and crustaceans on land.

Algae are the main source of food for shellfish and crustaceans cultivated in a  controlled environment. In collaboration with several other parties, Prins & Dingemanse Aquacultuur B.V. hopes to have developed a complete cultivation concept for shellfish and crustaceans on land within a few years. To achieve this, it has, for instance, a 12- hectare site, with supplies of fresh water from the Eastern Scheldt, on the Olzendepolder industrial estate in the municipality of Reimerswaal.

At Prins & Dingemanse Aquacultuur B.V., they are convinced that aquaculture on land

will better equip them to meet the current and future wishes of the market, i.e. the demand for good-quality mussels, continuity of supply and a sustainable cultivation process.

For the time being, it is primarily a supplement to the existing cultivation methods in open water, although one could think in terms of integrating certain phases of cultivation on land (aquaculture) with cultivation in open water or vice versa.

Koninklijke Prins & Dingemanse views the current, long-standing culture of oysters and mussels as a basis for the further development of Yerseke as an important European distribution centre for shellfish and crustaceans. New cultivation methods will start to play an increasingly important role here in the future.
